Since I’ve been going through my redesign, I’ve also been thinking about how to possibly improve other aspects of the site as well. One of the things which always seems to bubble up every now and then are how I score anime series.
Right now my method is to give a score to story, animation, music, coherence (if applicable), dubs (if applicable), and my own gut score, weight those scores, then average them into a final score.
The things I like about this way of scoring is that it makes creating the final score less arbitrary (it’s an average instead of a “here’s the score”) and the final score is very specific. However, the negative side to this is that the final scoring may be too specific and sometimes there may be a temptation to “fudge” the sub-scores in order to get an final score which I think is more appropriate.
So, I was thinking that I kind of have four choices:
- Keep how I score anime the same
- Score it the same, just round scores to the nearest percent (at least makes it a little less fine)
- Detach the sub-scores from the final score. What I mean is that I’d still score things like animation, story, etc., but they aren’t actually formally used in determining the “final” score, which would basically become what my “gut score” is now.
- Just do a final score without any sub-scoring.
I’m kind of wavering between the two, but I wanted to find out what people who visit blog find to be the most useful to determining whether they may want to watch a series or not. As a result, I’ve created a poll with each of these 4 options (and an “other” option, in case you come up with something I haven’t thought of). If you want to explain your opinion further, feel free to do so in the comments as well.
Yesterday I asked what you hoped would be licensed. This time it’s what do you think will be licensed. Again, Soul Eater and Evangelion are out given the clues for them.
I’m not including Soul Eater or the Evangelion movie as most people think they’re going to get licensed due to the hints. Poll is open until until midnight.
In response to the Spring 2007 Anime Preview, I wanted to see what anime series people thought I should blog. These results are non-binding, of course, but maybe it will give me an idea. You can choose up to 3 series.
I decided to post a new poll asking about series reviews. It’s been a while since I’ve posted one (October actually), but I have quite a few lined up to add. However, I’m wondering about whether people would rather have me post reviews to the blog first, and then re-review them during my podcast later (how I currently do it), or review shows on my podcast, and then post that review on my blog afterwards. Or maybe a mix of both?
The plus for the first option is that I may be able to do a better review in the podcast if I re-edit one I’ve already written. Of course, the negative to that is that it may take a while for newer series to be reviewed on my podcast.
In any case, I’ve put up a poll to see what people can think. If you think it should be a mix of both (keep posting reviews to the blog first, but feel free to review a new series on the podcast), you can select both options. The poll will close in a week, and you should be able to track the poll’s results on the sidebar.
I’ve added a new poll to the second sidebar if you hadn’t noticed. Occasionally I may add pollsto the site, and if I do, that’s where they’ll be. This poll is asking if I blogged a series I already own – something which I’ve toyed with – what series would you most like to see?
Now, two things. First, the key word is “if,” I haven’t decided whether to do it yet, though I am leaning towards it. Second, you might notice that all of the series listed are half-seasons. That’s mainly because I wanted to start off with something small first.
The poll will be open until the 13th at noon Eastern time.
