Spring 2009 Anime Preview

It’s that time again: It’s time to look at what anime is airing in the Spring 2009 season. Shows are listed in alphabetical order.

There are 5 possible levels of ratings that I’ll give a show:

  • Will Blog
  • May Blog (presumes Will Watch)
  • Will Watch
  • May Watch
  • Won’t Watch

As usual, I’m leaving out anything that seems to obviously be a children’s show. Like always, thanks to the Fansub Wiki for keeping a great list of upcoming shows.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way…here we go!

Here are some quick links to the shows if you want to go straight to a particular show:

Preview from Anime News Network:

Set in a gothic fantasy world, this is the story of Teito Klein, an orphaned slave who became the top military academy student. However, an unexpected turn of events left him pursued by the forces of the Barsburg Empire. Now an escaping convict, Teito’s sheltered by the church and it’s law of sanctuary. Here, he discovered many mysteries surrounding himself, the church, and the Empire itself.

The fact that he might be connected to a dethroned king and the mystical stone of god, ‘The Eye of Mikhael’ made him the target of the empire more than ever. Fortunately the church is under the mythical 7 Ghost protection. But who are the Ghosts really. Will Teito be free from the military’s clutch, And what of his said mission to uncover the history. And who is the military’s Chief-of-Staff Ayanami exactly. Teito’s future seems to have spiraled into an unexpectedly perilous path.

I don’t know. This sounds like another one of those weird techno/magical-fantasy shows with big monsters sent by some evil organization to take out the main protagonist, etc., etc., etc. It doesn’t sound completely lame…but still enough to pass.

Asura Cryin’

Asura Cryin'

Director: Keizou Kusakawa (Inukami, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS)
Production: Seven Arcs, Starchild

Preview from My Anime List:

The semi-serious school action story revolves around Tomoharu Natsume, a boy who has been haunted by a ghosty girl who was a childhood friend.

This sounds interesting.  I’d like more information about it before I commit to watching it (unless there ends up just being nothing else to watch), but at least it initially looks promising.  The premise could lead into either a comedy or a drama, and the description of it being “semi-serious” doesn’t necessarily help in that assessment.  In any case, this goes into my “maybe” list for now.

Preview from Wikipedia:

Basquash! is a sports and sci-fi anime production scheduled to air on Mainichi Broadcasting System in 2009 that involves characters playing basketball while riding mecha.

Not very descriptive, but given that I generally dislike both sports and mecha anime shows….chances are I’m staying away from this one.

Before Green Gables

Before Green Gables

Director: Katsuyoshi Yatabe (Baki the Grappler Maximum Tournament, Gundress)
Production: Nippon Animation

Preview from Wikipedia (about the book):

This book is about the death of Anne Shirley’s parents and the resulting struggles of Anne’s pre-Gables youth. The book shows how deeply in love Bertha and Walter Shirley were. The book also tells details about the fever that killed Anne’s parents. The book tells in detail the emotions Anne feels, the people in her life, and the way she connects with other people till she is on the train to Green Gables. The Thomases are bizarrely bitter.

I’ll just repeat what I wrote for the last season preview before it was moved to this season:

I remember watching some of the (US live action) Green Gables series when I was younger with my sister (as she liked it), but I don’t remember much from it.

I gave this one a lot of thought, but it just didn’t quite make the cut to watch.

Preview from Anime News Network (from manga):

Koh Kitamura is a fifth grader whose family runs a sporting goods store. One of the regular customers of his family’s store is the Tsukishima Batting Center, and so he gets to know the four daughters of the Tsukishima family (Ichiyo, Wakaba, Aoba, and Momiji) very well. Since Koh has spent so much time practicing in their batting cages, he has become a genius hitter, but has no knowledge of any other aspect of baseball. This is in contrast to Aoba, who, despite being a year younger, is an adept pitcher and hitter. Wakaba is a classmate of Koh’s, and she seems fully intent on marrying him when she grows up.

All seems idyllic in their world, until tragedy strikes. The story then skips ahead to four years later, as Koh has continued the training he began four years ago, but has not played in a baseball game since. As he finally begins playing again, it remains to be seen whether or not he will live up to the expectations of those who know the true talent he has been hiding all this time.

Yet another sports show, though this time with some romance perhaps thrown in.  Nevertheless, it’s still a sports show…

Dragonball Kai

Dragonball Kai

Starts Airing: April 5, 09:00
Station: Fuji TV
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Daisuke Nishio (Dragonball, Dragonball GT)
Production: Toei Animation
Webpage: http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/dragon_kai/

Preview from Anime News Network:

Toei Animation has confirmed that this spring’s Dragon Ball Kai re-airing of its Dragon Ball Z anime will be edited to more closely follow Akira Toriyama’s original manga. The Dragon Ball Z anime series originally ran from April 1989 to January 1996 in Japan. However, since Toriyama was still serializing his manga at the same time in shorter weekly installments, the Dragon Ball Z anime expanded its story by inserting additional content. The new Dragon Ball Kai remastering will be an “Akira Toriyama original cut edition” that will quicken the story presentation and adhere more with the manga’s story.

The anime footage will be enhanced with the latest digital technology. This includes a new full-HD remastering from the film reels of the original run, renewed soundtracks and sound effects, and new dialogue recordings with most of the original cast.

I never saw any of the Dragonball series, and since Dragonball Z is a sequal to the original Dragonball, I’ll be passing on this.  At first I thought this was a remastering of the original series, in which case it probably would have ended up on my “maybe” list, but since it’s DBZ, then it’s on my “won’t watch” list.

Also, anyone think it’s a coincidence that this is airing at the same time that the new live-action Dragonball movie is coming out?

Eden of the East

Preview from Anime News Network:

On November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be called as “Careless Monday,” does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later…

Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory. and he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he’s holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.

I’m not sure how one could be “saved” by a naked man with a gun and $82 million in e-cash in front of the White House….more likely the Secret Service would be more apt to gun you down.  However, besides that, this sounds like it could be an interesting series.  I think I’ll definitely watch it, though, and maybe blog it..

Meet Plug, an unusual girl from a parallel world. Plug is a “Juuden-chan,” capable of “recharging” people down on their luck, spreading good cheer wherever she goes!

Well that sounds interesting. Ok, no it doesn’t.  It looks like an excuse for a big-boob “moe” fan service show (hell, the company which is making it lists “moe” as one of it’s policies. No, seriously, it does).

Josh’s Judgment: Won’t Watch

Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist

Preview from Anime News Network (from manga):

When two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric tried to revive their mother using Alchemy, something went drastically wrong. Edward lost his leg and his arm, and Alphonse lost his entire body. Now, a few years later, Edward becomes what’s known as a “State Alchemist” or a Nationally recognized Alchemist. Along with Alphonse, who’s spirit has been put into a metal suit of armor, and his Automail leg and arm, the two brothers set out to find a way to restore themselves.

This is a remake (not sequel) of the first TV anime series, presumably hewing closer to the manga than the first one, as the manga was still in progress at the time of the first series (and will reportedly wrap up about the same time as this series).  I watched the original series once, but never got all that attached to it, so I figure this is a good chance to watch it again in a “new and improved” state.

Maybe this is an unfair assessment, but promotional website looks like it’s very, how shall I put it, girly.  In other words, that’s a hell of a lot of pink.  That on top of the fact that this sounds like it’s a girl-goes-after-bad-boy show means that I’ll probably stay away from it.

When the people of the Middle Country is attacked by demonic creatures, it is up to Guin to save them.

I’m not really one for fantasy shows like this, but I hear it is based on a truly epic (over 120 volumes, and still ongoing) manga which is very highly regarded.  I initially had this on my “may watch” list, but I dropped it after narrowing that list down to a more reasonable number.

A very powerful industrialist directs his daughter to pick a husband from three candidates he has chosen for her. They are to come into her life, and their uniqueness would cause her to recognize them immediately. All three of the candidates are outstanding. Well, it’s actually four…

The story evolves along the lines of a power political mystery involving a small middle eastern country.

It’s the ever revered reverse harem show!  These types of shows can some times drag for me at times.  If this were a really slow season, I might think about picking this up, but not this time.  And gee, I can’t figure out who the “4th man” is…

Hmm, pedo high school boy starts stalking girl, which causes her to be kidnapped by said high school boy’s rival, resulting in before-referenced girl to realize that she’s super strong?  This looks like a comedy/moe/school show, though I still have doubts about it.

A story of 4 high school girls who are trying to save the light music club.

Not very descriptive, but this essentially looks like it boils down to rocker chicks at school.  I’m not sure how exciting that sounds right off the bat (though I’m sure you’ll get some good music in the series).  Then again, it IS from Kyoto Animation, which is usually as close to an automatic watch for me as it gets.  For now I’ll put it on the “maybe” list.

Starts Airing: April 2, 26:15

Episodes: Unknown
Director: Koichi Mashimo (.Hack, Noir)
Production: Bee Train, Genco

Preview from My Anime List:

A spate of mafia assassinations occurs in America, the work of the mysterious organization named Inferno. “Phantom” is their most strongest and capable assassin, however a lone tourist witnesses Phantom’s latest act of murder. He unwittingly exposes the top assassin’s true identity, a young girl named Ein. Witnesses are usually killed, but the man is captured and taken to be brainwashed into “Zwei”, Inferno’s newest assassin, with no memory of who he is. From this point on, Zwei is drawn into a world of conspiracy, deceit and violence.

This actually sounds pretty good to me.  The genre isn’t one that usually suits my taste, but the general story line sounds interesting, and the animation company and director boost the idea that this might be a pretty well executed (pardon the pun) show.  I also like picking up off-the-beaten path shows, so this goes onto the “may blog” list.

Wow, very scantly clad women who are fighting to the death so they can become queen (also, I like how you can be an alien or not even intelligent to fight to be queen, but apparently males are barred from the competition).  This just sound like it has “stupid” written all over it.

Thrown into this adult world, Nicoletta must try to find personal and professional stability – things that become increasingly difficult to achieve as she falls under the spell of Casetta Dell’orso.

I’m guessing the name of this show is supposed to be some mangled version of “Restaurant Paradise.”  In any case, this sounds like your run of the mill reverse harem, so I think I’ll pass.

Director: Manabu Ono (Dragonaut – The Resonance, Transformers: Cybertron)

Preview from My Anime List:

Miyanaga Saki is a very skilled mahjong player. One day she gets dragged into the Mahjong Club and surprises some of the other members by being able to break even after every round, a play style that developed due to the fact that her family would get mad if she won whenever they played so she would carefully lose on purpose. But here’s the catch, she hates mahjong.

A show full of moe girls about mahjong, staring a girl who, mentally, can never win mahjong and who secretly hates playing the game.  By the director of Dragonaut.  From Gonzo.  Which probably means a lot of gratuitous fan service.  I’m trying to think if there is any reason to actually watch this show.  At least Shion no Ou had a drama element to it.

This series will be available for legal download on Crunchyroll.

In the age of the Warring Countries, Japan was fragmented in semi-independent provinces, governed by feudal lords or daimyo, who confronted each other in an endless struggle for power. Ambitious daimyos from every corner of the Archipelago had shouted their battle cry. They were Takeda Shingen from Kai, Sanada Yukimura, Uesugi Kenshin from Echigo, Azai Nagamasa from Omi, Tokugawa Ieyasu from Mikawa, and many more…

Those were days of unrest and chaos. As war spread throughout the country, the map of power underwent rapid and dramatic changes.

In this never-ending conflict, one man finally seemed to be just one step from establishing total control over the country. He was the lord of Owari, the Sixth Heavenly Devil King. His name was Oda Nobunaga.

But now, a young general clad in azure makes his unexpected appearance in this confused scenario, heading a huge army of cavalrymen from the Northern provinces.

He is known as Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon.

And he is coming for Oda Nobunaga’s head, and for ultimate supremacy!

It sound like a somewhat interesting historical anime show.  However, I don’t think that’s enough to make me want to watch it.

The story takes place in the middle of the 21st century when global warming has turned Tokyo into a tropical city. However, despite the flow of refugees to the new city of Atlas, there are not many residents who can actually live there. Moreover, anti-government guerillas are attempting to stop the forestation.

Well, this at least sounds interesting, and given that it’s from Gonzo and Murata is doing the character designs, it should look pretty.  However, the premise could either be really good or bomb.  Nevertheless, I think this looks promising enough to put on my “may blog” list.

Set in contemporary times, the battle of the Gods (extraterrestrials thought to be Gods by the ancient Greeks) continues. Hades (in mythology, the ruler of the underworld, embodied by Dr. Hell) has returned to attack the Earth and exterminate the human race, and to protect it Zeus sends a robot born from him, Z Mazinger (this is why the Z of Zeus is before the name and not after it as in Mazinger Z, where it’s not related to the Greek god).

The robot is given by chance to a student called Koji Kabuto (the classic Mazinger hero) and together with Aphrodite (piloted by Sayaka) and other classic Mazinger characters such as Tetsuya he defends the planet. Many other gods are involved, and their relationships of love and envy are part of the plot.

I’m not that much of a mecha fan.  If i were, this might sound interesting, but alas, it doesn’t.  Also, the character designs I’ve seen look…odd, but that’s just me.

China 2A.D.: the corrupt Han Dynasty has thrown the entire country into chaos. Peasants revolt against the government. Into such an age, the ruthless and infamous hero, Chao Chao Men De is born. Destroying old customs and values, he tries to unite China, with a band of promising and intellectual followers, handpicked for their individual talents and potential. Generally thought a villain, Chao Chao Men De is portrayed as a hero in this story, which focuses on what kind of person he actually was. There are two other protagonists: Liu Bei Xuan De and Sun Quan Zheng Mou. Lui is a man of high morals and infinite potential. His servant, Zhu Ge Kong Ming is a mysterious man, who helps Lui to become a king who is loved by millions. Sun is the third descendant of the Sun family. A young and immature king also comes into the picture, creating more chaos. This is a Tale of the Three Kingdoms (“Sanguozhi”) in which these three men rage war throughout China.

This is also known as Natsu no Arashi.  Well, the director doing this series has a wide range of series which I’ve watched and either like or at least don’t not like.  And the description sounds somewhat appealing.  It’s definitely on my “may watch” list right now. My own doubt is the fact that the art so far doesn’t look….great, but that’s not always necessarily telling of the animation either.

The story centers on Yūri Mito, a student at the Sōsei Academy and the only son of the man who runs the Yachimata shrine. At Yachimata, there is a legend of a deity named Tayutayu-sama who protected the area, but this deity and other so-called “Tayutai” have been lost in time. Mito and his friends discover a relic on the school grounds with mysterious patterns on them. Then, at the opening ceremony of the new school year, an equally mysterious girl named Mashiro appears before Mito. Mashiro is somehow tied to the relic and the legend of Tayutayu-sama.

This sounds like a “moe”/harem/supernatural/animal-people show.  The supernaturl part might be interesting if it wasn’t mixed with the other three (not that moe is bad…it’s just that shows centered around it tend to, well, suck).  I’m trying to find something appealing to this series other than the art, and I really can’t.

In a world resembling the middle-age. A girl, Riannon, is set to be sacrificed to appease a resurrected demon lord, Arawn. As her brother Arthur attempts to rescue her, Arawn defies those who resurrected him and frees Riannon from her captors, which leads to Riannon admiring him.

This eventually leads to a party of companions being assembled for adventure, with Arawn acting as the leader.

I’m really mixed on this one.  The premise sounds somewhat interesting and is promising, if executed well.  However, the scantly-clad women give me pause on whether this is going to be more action/adventure or more “let’s have an excuse to show fan service.”  It’s on my may watch list, though somewhat hesitantly.

Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles

Starts Airing: April 4, 22:30
Station: Tokyo MX TV
Episodes: 26
Director: Yasutaka Yamamoto (debut)
Production: A-1 Pictures

Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe – divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The story follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation’s 7th Platoon as they engage in a series of epic battles.

Hmm, this sounds interesting, but I don’t know about for 26 episodes.  I’ve always wanted to hit a show of this genre, but there always seemed to be something else wrong with the show that made me skip it.  However, I may actually try watching this one.

  2. Great list… I will be looking forward to many of these.

    Especially,
    Pandora Hearts
    Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~

The whole alternate world, close to the real world thing is fun. I think Pandora Hearts will be interesting, but interesting has been butchered before. I hope they keep it stylish and good characters. The manga allready has 7 volumes out. I hope they keep true to the story, most animes based off mangas turn out better that way. I also hope this turns out into a long show, maybe near 50+ episodes. I am tired of this 12 episode crap.

Phantom looks like its going to be a huge character development style anime. I been waiting for one of these to come out. Not to mention, the more mature nature is good. To many cliche’, kid friendly stuff out there.

  3. Fullmetal Alchemist all the way!
Me and all my friends are up to date on all the manga volumes that are out. The series is doing great so far. There’s only maybe another two volumes left, and yet everything is still unique and fantastic! I can’t believe that they are finally animating the manga! (This time with the proper ending) :)
    It’s feels like Christmas!

  4. only looking forward to about 4 animes…
and Cross Game you have no clue what you talking about

  5. I’m going to watch the titles on your May Blog, May Watch, Will Watch list with a few exceptions along with the fanservice titles just because I have nothing better to do with my bandwidth.

Urgh. Is it just me or am I getting less and less excited about the seasonal anime that’s being served.

Perhaps it’s just age creeping in.

  7. wow! Really like the format you’ve made with the summary, comment (you sir, are a bit sarcastic but in a nice and fun way ^___^), judgement and the linking bit.

I’m watching Pandora Hearts (perked my interest) and Tears to Tiara (the last bit at the end of episode 1 is what got me reeled in to watch episode 2) as well. I’m pretty happy already with how they made FMA the first time around though so I’m sitting out on the second remake.

  8. good choices….
