It’s CLANNAD: After Story episode 1, the continuation of the CLANNAD series from last fall. This episode is largely meant to reintroduce the viewers to the primary characters involved.
Akio, Nagisa’s father, is on a baseball team with other members of the town’s shopping district and which plays games against a rival shopping district. Unfortunately, the other team has recruited a former national player and has thus started a winning streak over Akio’s team. As a result, Akio asks Tomoya to ask all of his friends to form a team so that they can compete. Tomoya ultimately gathers Kyou, Tomoyo, Kotomi, Sunohara and his sister, Misae (Sunohara’s dorm manager), and Yoshino (the former singer) for the team.
Of course, Akio and the girls are all the best players, as Yoshino has a tendency to lose track of things in his own self absorption, Sunohara messes up everything he touches, and Tomoya’s bad shoulder prevents him from being very effective. Once Akio’s team takes the lead, the opponent’s big player “accidentally” loses his bat, which slams into Akio’s leg (who is also pitching). As a result, Nagisa has to go in as a relief pitcher, and the other team takes the lead and it’s all up to Tomoya in the bottom of the final inning. Luckily for him, he pulls it out despite his shoulder.
As I said at the top, this was largely an episode which introduces all the main characters. Perhaps the part I liked best, though, was Kotomi’s computer analysis of the pitch she was going to receive, because it just shows how she thinks and how smart she is.
The episode also has a couple of things for us to look forward to/remember: The scene at the end with the robot, as well as a scene at the start with a man and a small boy (maybe Tomoya and his father when he was younger?)
In any case, I thought this was a rather pointless episode to start the series with as it doesn’t tell us anything about what this series is going to be about, but having a “let’s catch up” episode to start a second season isn’t necessarily unexpected.
