Spring 2008 Anime Preview

It’s that time again: It’s time to look at what anime is airing in the Spring 2008 season. Shows are listed in alphabetical order.

There are 7 possible levels of ratings that I’ll give a show:

  • Will definitely blog it
  • May blog it
  • Will definitely watch it
  • May watch it
  • May watch it if I hear good things about it
  • Probably Won’t Watch it
  • Won’t watch it

As usual, I’m leaving out sequels to series that I haven’t seen yet (which I think is all of them this season), as well as anything that seems to obviously be a children’s show. As usual, thanks to the Fansub Wiki for keeping a great list of upcoming shows.

When you’re finished reading this, feel free to go over and take my poll asking which series you’d like to see blogged.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way…here we go!

Here are some quick links to the shows if you want to go straight to a particular show:

Allison and Lillia

Starts Airing: April 3, 23:32
Station: NHK-BS2
Episodes: 26
Director: Masayoshi Nishida (Eyeshield 21, Mokke)
Webpage: http://allison-web.net/

From My Anime List:

This series takes place in a time roughly equivalent to the 1930s in our world. The world is divided into two cultures by a towering mountain range and huge river, and at the time of the story, the two cultures have been at war for hundreds of years. Allison, an air force pilot, and her childhood friend Will (pronounced Vill), who has a photographic memory, end up stealing an airplane and chasing some kidnappers across the river into the other country. Fortunately, they speak both languages…

The art for this series looks somewhat appealing, and the story sounds interesting, at least on the first read. I may try checking this series out.

Josh’s Judgment: May watch it

Allison and Lillia preview

Amatsuki

Starts Airing: April 4, 26:30
Station: KBS Kyoto
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Getbackers, Le Chevalier D’Eon, Rurouni Kenshin, You’re Under Arrest)
Webpage: http://amatsuki.com/web/index.html

From My Anime List:

The high schooler Tokidoki failed in history and now is forced to visit a virtual reality of old Tokyo to do some serious studying. Unexpectedly he is attacked by a monster and loses his left eye. Then he discovers that he cannot leave the simulation anymore…

So, this basically the “Total Recall” of anime I guess. The director seems to have an impressive list of shows (even if I haven’t actually seen any of them yet). Again, the abstract of this show seems at least somewhat reasonable. Maybe. In the maybe pile it goes for now.

Josh’s Judgment: May watch it

Blassreiter

Starts Airing: April 5, 26:00
Station: TV Kanagawa
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Ichiro Itano (Gantz, Angel Cop)
Webpage: http://www.blassreiter.com/

From THAT’s Spring 2008 Preview (seriously):

Set in the near-future, in a town in Germany. There have been incidents of dead people coming back to life, transforming into “grotesque shadows”, and attacking people. Living people show up who can transform themselves into demons whenever they want. They used to be regular humans, but when they gained this power to transform, people rejected them and called them demons. But they still use their powers, each for his own reason. However, they cannot deny their fate: to fight in a deadly battle royal with others who have turned into demons.

This series sounds so terribly bad.

Josh’s Judgment: Probably Won’t Watch These Series

Candy Boy

Starts Airing: May 2, N/A
Station: Online (Niconico Anime Channel)
Episodes: 7
Director: Takafumi Hoshikawa (Happy Lesson)
Webpage: http://candyboy.jp/

From My Anime List:

Twin sisters, Yukino and Kanade Sakurai, room together in the dorms at their high school, enjoying school life with their friends and one another. One day, Sakuya Kamiyama, an underclassman, seeks out Yukino, while Kanade learns from a friend that Sakuya has admired Yukino for a very long time. This innocent revelation sets into motion a chain of events that eventually lead to Yukino expressing her feelings for her sister.

Oh wow. Let’s throw everything together at once. Not only potential incest, but twincest, and yuri twincest at that, possibly! I almost feel complelled to watch this just to see how it turns out.

Josh’s Judgment: Will Watch It

Candy Boy preview

Crystal Blaze

Starts Airing: April 8, 25:15
Station: Chiba TV
Episodes: 12
Director: Mitsuko Kase (SaiKano)
Webpage: http://anime.biglobe.ne.jp/crystal-blaze/

From My Anime List:

The stage is the Middle East in a not to far away future: The streets of Rags Town, a place where the scum of the society gathers. Shun is a detective living a free life in this town of outcasts doing what pleased him best. But this changes after meeting a beautiful mysterious girl who lost her memory. Now Shun has to solve this mystery and face a powerful enermy.

This is an apparently self proclaimed “anime for adults with violence and sexual themes.” This sounds like a shoot-em-up show. Not really up my alley.

Josh’s Judgment: Probably Won’t Watch it

Crystal Blaze

Golgo 13

Starts Airing: April 11, 25:23
Station: TV Tokyo
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Shunji Ôga (Mankatsu, Soreike! Anpanman: Gomira no Hoshi)
Webpage: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/golgo/

From My Anime List:

Golgo 13 has been called a Japanese counterpart to James Bond, except with a darker character, a much more hardcore attitude towards sex, and a complete lack of morality. Golgo 13 is described as a mystery man of undetermined origin, possibility being at least part Japanese, who takes any assignment for any employer (it has been said he has worked for the CIA and the KGB) as long as the right price is given and will always fulfill his contracts, even if he has two or more opposing contracts at the same time. He is an uncanny sharpshooter, with near 100% accuracy and capable of lethal trick shooting, and regularly uses a customized, scoped M-16 rifle in his assassinations. He also is a heavy smoker of cigars.

So it’s a shoot-em-up, blow-em-up show with a completely unsympathetic lead character. OK, fight scenes may be cool, but I’m not sure how someone could possibly get into this unless the fight scenes is all you’re looking for. I’ll pass unless I end up being wrong about this series.

Josh’s Judgment: May watch if I Hear Good Things About It

Golgo 13 preview

Himitsu -Top Secret-

Starts Airing: April 8, 25:29
Station: Nippon TV
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Hiroshi Aoyama (Rocket Girls)
Webpage: http://www.hakusensha.co.jp/himitsu/

From My Anime List:

A newly developed method allows to display the memories of dead people. It is used to solve difficult murder cases. But at what cost? What of the dead’s privacy as strangers poke about in their most private memories? What about the effects the imageries may have on the persons whose jobs require going through psychotic murderers’ minds and experience whatever emotions and feelings these murderers felt as they skin and disembowel their victims?

The premise of this show seems interesting, in any case. Again, I’m not sure it rises to the level of wanting to jump on it, but I may consider watching it.

Josh’s Judgment: May Watch It

Himitsu -Top Secret- preview

Itazura na Kiss

Starts Airing: April 4, Unknown Time
Station: TBS
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Osamu Yamazaki (Gallery Fake, Lemon Angel, Toward the Terra)
Webpage: http://itakiss-anime.jp/index.htm

From My Anime List:

3rd year high school girl AIHARA Kotoko has been in love with a guy at her school named IRIE Naoki since their first year. However, there are things that prevented Kotoko from confessing her love for him, first and foremost being that he is a member of ‘A-class’ or the top ranking class in the school. Naoki is incredibly smart, always getting the top score in the school on all the exams. Naoki is also really popular and handsome and has been the class president every year. That’s a pretty intimidating list of things for a girl to face! Poor Kotoko is in ‘F-class’, the lowest class in the school with the poorest grades. He is so far above her level!

But Kotoko finally gathers up her courage, and on her 18th birthday, she decides to give Naoki a love letter and tell him she loves him. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. She presents her letter, but instead of accepting it and returning her feelings, Naoki just gives Kotoko a look of disgust and boredom, and tells her flat out right there that he doesn’t want her letter, and he doesn’t like ’stupid girls’.

Poor Kotoko. Now it’s time for things to get even worse. Walking home from school, Kotoko discovers her house has collapsed! Now Kotoko and her father are left homeless! All they can do is stay at the sushi-shop her father owns and runs. This doesn’t last for long. Soon they go to live at the house of one of her father’s highschool friends. The friend happens to be none other than IRIE Naoki’s father. And this means that Kotoko is now living with the guy she likes! She is overjoyed at this news, but her reception from Naoki is very cold. She is also greeted with hostility by Naoki’s younger brother Yuuki, who is being forced to give up his bedroom to Kotoko.

Meh. The set-up for this series sounds so unoriginal that it isn’t even funny. I may grab it if I hear good things about it, but I’ll pass on it for now

Josh’s Judgment: May Watch It If I Hear Good Things About It

Junjou Romantica

Starts Airing: April 2, 27:38
Station: TV Kyushu
Episodes: 24
Director: Chiaki Kon (When They Cry)
Webpage: http://www.suzukisan.info/index2.html

From My Anime List:

Misaki is suddenly having some unexpected and odd problems. What started as a need for some college entrance exam tutoring has somehow led him to being romanced by a suave older man who also happens to be his big brother’s best friend. Confused by all of his brand new emotions, Misaki struggles to deal with his suddenly very odd life. And if that wasn’t enough, his suitor, Usami, has plenty of issues of his own. A man-child who decorates his room in giant teddy bears and toys, Usami is a famous novelist who also writes steamy boys’ love novels on the side. When Misaki cracks open one of these books and reads sentences like “Misaki licks every inch of Usami’s hot body”…well, let’s just say that all hell breaks loose. And if one couple isn’t enough for you, Junjo Romantica focuses on three different sets of lovers, each with their own compelling stories.

For the love of god, no.

Josh’s Judgment: Won’t Watch It

Junjou Romantica preview

Kamen no Maid Guy

Starts Airing: April 5, 25:35
Station: AT-X
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Masayuki Sakoi (Princess Resurrection, Strawberry Panic!)
Webpage: http://www.maidguy.com/

From My Anime List:

Fujiwara Naeka is a typical 17 year-old high school student. Or so we thought. She`s really one of two surviving heirs of a tycoon who has the right to inherit his mass fortune when she turns 18 in half a year. Fubuki, a young and beautiful maid, and Kogarashi, a big burly maid guy with a mask, have been assigned to keep Naeka and her brother Kousuke safe from those who would plot their demise, and to steal the fortune she would inherit.

If nothing else, this seems to look pretty funny, if not having an already beaten-to-death premise (though perhaps not with a big burly guy as the maid…), in a season which seems to have a lack of comedy series. My worry is for the comedy to go way WAY over the top, considering it is….Maid Guy (with a big burley guy). But heck, I’ll probably end up watching this.

Josh’s Judgment: I’ll Watch It

Kamen no Maid Guy preview

Kanokon

Starts Airing: April 5, 10:30
Station: AT-X
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Atsushi Ootsuki (Episode Director for Fullmetal Alchemist)
Webpage: http://www.kanokon.com/

From Wikipedia:

Kanokon’s story revolves around Kouta Oyamada, a young first-year high school student who moves from the country to the city and thus transfers to Kunpō High School. On his first day at his new school, a beautiful second-year female student named Chizuru Minamoto asks him to meet her alone in the music room. When he arrives, she reveals her that she is in fact a fox deity and from that day on the two hang out together.

The description doesn’t necessarily sound all that thrilling on it’s own. However, going to the homepage tells you right away what type of series this is going to be: a fan service-laden one. I don’t think I’m gonna watch this unless I’m just desperate for something to watch.

Josh’s Judgment: Probably Won’t Watch It

Kure-nai

Starts Airing: April 3, 26:00
Station: Chiba TV
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Kou Matsuo (Rozen Maiden, Dead Girls)
Webpage: http://www.samidareso.com/

From My Anime List:

16-year-old Shintaro Kurenai, a specialist in settling squabbles between people, is one day approached by the daughter of a powerful plutocratic family asking him to be her bodyguard.

Based on the Kure-nai light novel series.

OK, so not very informative, but the art and website looks interesting. Given the lack of very much interesting this season, perhaps I’ll take a look at this.

Josh’s Judgment: May Watch It

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki

Starts Airing: April 12, 25:00
Station: TV Kanagawa
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Yasuhiro Kuroda (Chocotto Sister, Myself;Yourself)
Webpage: http://www.kyouran.jp/

From My Anime List:

This show depict the not-so-normal life of a “family” that includes a catgirl “mother,” a lion “son,” a living land-combat android weapon “son,” a jellyfish-like otherworldly “daughter,” and a hapless 27-year-old military officer as their “father.” This motley “family” was assembled as part of the Imperial Japanese Anti-Paranormal Phenomena Section’s Special Operations Forces to save Earth in 2063.

I immediately get bad vibes from this given that the mother is a cat-girl loli. Let’s merge two of my more despised fetishes into one character! The art doesn’t look all that hot either

Josh’s Judgment: Won’t Watch It

Library War

Starts Airing: April 10, 24:45
Station: Fuji TV
Episodes: 12
Director: Takayuki Hamana (Sisters of Wellber, The Prince of Tennis)
Webpage: http://www.toshokan-sensou.com/

From My Anime List:

It is 2019, and the crime-riddled society suffers under a strongly implemented Media “Enhancement” Law. Unbeknownst to the powerful Media Enhancement Law Commission, the Library has been secretly arming itself…

The objective of the Media Enhancement Law is to make the society “be free of any discrimination and be politically correct” by oppressing the freedom of speech and writing.

This sounds like a conservative’s dream come true. Fighting evil political correct people who are oppressing all the conservatives from spewing vile hatred!

Of course, that’s probably not the twist the story will take, but just reading the write-up, it could. I don’t know. A show about fighting librarians (doesn’t that sound like a lame sports nickname? “And the Fighting Librarians take the lead!”) doesn’t sound very interesting to me.

Josh’s Judgment: Won’t Watch It

Monochrome Factor

Starts Airing: April 7, 26:00
Station: TV Tokyo
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Yuu Kou (Chrono Crusade, Loveless)
Webpage: http://www.monochro.tv/

From My Anime List:

Akira Nikaido is a typical slacker high school student who thinks he has a normal life–until a mysterious man called Shirogane appears and tells him to meet him at the school that night. He is skeptical but goes anyway…and gets attacked by a shadow monster! Shirogane convinces him that the balance between the human world and the shadow world has been distorted, and that Akira must become a shin–a creature of the shadow world–in order to help restore the balance.

Maybe this will be good, but the initial description doesn’t really have me excited or anything.

Josh’s Judgment: May watch it if I hear good things about it

Nabari no Ou

Starts Airing: April 6, 25:30
Station: TV Tokyo
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Kunihisa Sugishima (Speed Grapher, Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Webpage: http://www.nabari.tv/

From My Anime List:

Rokujou Miharu was a seemly reluctant junior high student living in his own world. However, within him, lurked the ultimate power of Nabari, “Omnipotent”. To possess such supreme weapon, the Wolf Pack of Iga swore to bring Miharu back to Iga village. On the other hand, Miharu’s English teacher, Kumohira sensei, and classmate, Kouichi, were the Banten ninjas whose mission was to protect Miharu. A war waged over the ownership of “Omnipotent” thus started. To survive, Miharu must enter the hidden world Nabari, to become the king.

OK, this one sounds weird. I’m not sure if it’s up my ally, but it seems reasonably interesting enough for me to put it on my “maybe” list anyway.

Nijuu Mensou no Musume

Starts Airing: April 12, 26:05
Station: Fuji TV
Episodes: 22
Director: Nobuo Tomizawa (Futakoi, Ramen Fighter Miki)
Webpage: http://www.chico-tv.com/

From My Anime List:

The story revolves a female thief named Chico, who is the spiritual successor to the Kaijin Nijū-Mensō (The Fiend with 20 Faces) thief character created by famed suspense and detective novelist Ranpo Edogawa.

OK, not a thrilling premise, but not bad. The art looks killer on this, though. I may give it a try.

Penguin Musume Heart

Starts Airing: April 19, N/A
Station: Online (Chou! Animelo/Niko Niko Douga)
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Tetsuya Takahashi (Directorial Debut)
Webpage: http://pen-musu.jp/

From ANN:

The story centers on Sakura, the 14-year-old daughter of the rich Nankyoku family, and her classmates. Since “Nankyoku” happens to be Japanese for Antarctica and Sakura happens to be an Akihabara otaku (she transferred to her new school while wearing full cosplay gear), she earns the nicknames “Penguin” and “A-Girl.”

Hmm…looks from the manga art as more of a fanservice fest than anything else. Since this is an ONA it may be short, so I may check it out just for that reason.

Real Drive

Starts Airing: April 8, 24:59
Station: Nippon TV Network
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Getbackers, Le Chevalier D’Eon, Rurouni Kenshin, You’re Under Arrest)
Webpage: http://www.ntv.co.jp/RD/

From My Anime List:

2061 AD. Fifty years have passed since mankind developed the Network society. It was anticipated that this new infrastructure would realize a utopia where people connected with each other at the level of consciousness. However, new social problems such as personal data leaks and proliferation of manipulated information began to surface. Nevertheless, people still relied on the Network to exchange information, and proved unable to opt to abandon it.

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. This was called Meta Real Network, usually abbreviated as “the Metal.”

The Metal accommodated personal memory data within protected virtual stand-alone organic cyber enclaves called bubble shells and eventually pervaded the everyday lives of people.

However, people gradually learned to release and explode their instincts within the secure environment of the Metal. The unleashed instincts pushed each individual’s consciousness to drown in the sea of information and to be exposed to the pressures of desire. Meanwhile, norms and regulations continued to bind their real world lives. Thus, strange friction between the two worlds began to manifest themselves as aberrations beyond the bounds of the imaginable.
Experts who challenged the deep sea of the Metal to investigate and decipher such aberrations were called cyber divers.

This is a Production I.G. show, and one of the incredibly few shows this season which actually sounds like it may be an interesting watch.

Soul Eater

Starts Airing: April 7, 18:00
Station: TV Tokyo
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Takuya Igarashi (Ojamamjo Doremi, Ouran High School Host Club)
Webpage: http://www.souleater.tv/

From My Anime List:

The story takes place at the Shinigami Weaponry Vocational School, a school for creating Death Scythes for Gods of Death. The human and demon students seek the seeds of the souls of 99 humans and the soul of one witch, all of which are needed to turn just one of the demon students into a Death Scythe. One of the human students, Maka Alban, is paired with Soul Eater, a boyish demon whose true form is a scythe, as they collect the needed souls to transform Soul Eater.

Well, this series sounds yummy. Let’s go around gathering souls, shall we? Maybe it will be better than it’s description, but I’m probably not watching it.

Special A

Starts Airing: April 6, 25:30
Station: Chiba TV
Episodes: 24
Director: Yoshikazu Miyao (Gad Guard)
Webpage: http://special-a.jp/

From ANN:

Hikari Hanazono, the main character, has always been second to Kei Takishima. While Hikari considers Kei a rival and somewhat of a friend, Kei loves Hikari. Everyone knows this, but she is too dense to notice. Their wrestling loving fathers first introduced them to one another when they were 6 years old. Assuming that she was the best in wrestling, young Hikari challenged Kei to a wrestling match only to be thoroughly defeated by him. Ever since that fateful incident, Hikari swore to beat Kei in school grades, a sporting event – anything. To do this she has enrolled in the same school as Kei since elementary. Now she attends Hakusenkan, an ultra elite school, that costs her carpenter father a lot of money. Hikari and Kei are the top two students in the school, with Kei holding firmly to that number one position

So this sounds like the His and Her Circumstances of this season in a way. One might think that’s bad, considering my review of His and Her wasn’t all that good, but that was more a result of what GAINAX did with the series as it progressed and not the idea behind the series. This actually looks like one of the more promising series this season.

To Love-Ru

Starts Airing: April 3, 25:55
Station: TBS
Episodes: 26
Director: Takao Kato (Buso Renkin, Sorcerer Hunters)
Webpage: http://www.j-toloveru.com/

From My Anime List:

The story is about Rito Yuuki, a high-school boy who cannot confess to the girl of his dreams, Haruna Sairenji. One day when coming home and sulking in the bath-tub a mysterious, nude girl, appears out of nowhere. Her name is Lala and she comes from the planet Deviluke, where she is the heir to the throne. Her father wants her to return to her home planet so she can marry one of the husband candidates, but she decides that she wants to marry Rito in order to stay on Earth..

I think I’ll call this DearS season 2. Unfortunately I didn’t really like DearS all that much. This is looks to be a guaranteed shallow fan-service fest. And it’s 26 episodes to boot!

To Love-Ru preview

The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of URUK

Starts Airing: April 4, 25:15
Station: TV Kanagawa
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Koichi Chigira (Full Metal Panic!, Gate Keepers, Last Exile)
Webpage: http://www.druaga-anime.com/

From My Anime List:

It is said that every few years, there is what’s known as the “Summer of Anu.” During that summer, thanks to the divine protection of the sky-god Anu, all of the demons in the tower lose their power. The country of Uruk has begun an invasion of the tower in order to suppress the demons. They’ve built up positions inside the tower, with their sights set on getting to the upper levels. The Uruk army knows that this is the third Summer of Anu-a perfect time to launch a mission to suppress the monster Druaga once and for all. The army soldiers aren’t the only ones in the tower, though. An enitre city called Meskia has formed inside the tower’s first floor. It plays host not just to soldiers, but also to adventurers who have heard rumors about a legendary treasure called the Blue Crystal Rod, which is said to rest at the very top of the tower. With all these different groups in the mix, each with its own agenda, one can only guess how things will play out during this unusual summer.

Well, the director sure has a good list of credits under his belt, but this is a GONZO anime, which seems to be pretty hit or miss. It means good animation, but does it mean a good story? The preview sounds a little iffy to me. I’ll put this in the maybe pile.

Vampire Knight

Starts Airing: April 7, 25:00
Station: TV Tokyo
Episodes: Unknown
Director: Kiyoko Sayama (Angel Sanctuary, Pretear)
Webpage: http://www.vampire-knight.jp/

From ANN:

Yuki’s earliest memory is of a stormy night in winter, wherein she was attacked by a vampire… And then rescued by another. Now 10 years later, Yuki Cross, the adapted daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, has grown up and become a guardian of the vampire race, protecting her savior, Kaname, from discovery as he leads a group of vampires at the elite boarding school. But also at her side is Zero Kiryu, a childhood friend who’s hatred for the creatures that destroyed everything he held dear, is now determined never to trust them. This coexisting arrangement seems all well and good, but have the vampires truly renounced their murderous ways, or is there a darker truth behind their actions. Is Kaname’s infatuation with Yuki the beginning of a forbidden romance, or is it something in her forgotten past that draws him to her. Because in this world of secrets, nothing is as it seems. And the price of misplaced trust may even be worse than death.

I’m not necessarily one for Vampire shows (though I liked MoonPhase well enough). This looks kind of interesting, but I’m just afraid that this is going to turn into a Vampire munch-fest show which most of them look like they are, so I’m still a little hesitant. The art looks attractive, though.

From Anime Suki Forum:

Tenko Kuugen. The thousand year old demon/yokai fox that served as their guardian god for hundred of years, able to use all sort of spells, but has a extremely mischivious personility, playing all sort of pranks, until finally the Mitsuji family sealed it up, until present day, when a situation forced them to free it, after the crises, it quit it’s job and became the guardian god of the Takamichi family, extremely smart and curious, it was able to figure out modern world technology, and learn to blend in, but has a personilty of doing as it please, it’s too old to remember it’s origional gender, so it has both male and female form. but doesn’t hate the Mitsuiji for sealing it up. likes the Takamichi brother and will protect them at all cost.

Ignoring the horrendously long run-on sentence and bad grammar, this sounds half-way decent. I wasn’t sure about the animal-girl shows going into Spice and Wolf, but it’s been OK, so I may give this a shot.

From My Anime List:

It’s the 21st century, and the number of ESPers continues to increase. They are active in the military, diplomacy, politics, and in other places. They hold the key for global competition. A country that controls ESP can control the world! However individuals who posses higher that Level 4 are less than 3% of the population. There are only three Level 7 people who have government contracts. These three are Kaoru, Aoi, and Shiho, ten-year old girls, who work for B.A.B.E.L. With the guidance of Kouichi, a twenty-year old genius, they catch criminals and evil ESPers.

Because a series set in the 21st century is sooo futuristic…considering we’re already in the 21st century. The description doesn’t sound all that thrilling to me, and I would rather avoid any show done by the person in charge of Moetan as if my life depended on it.

OK, so for those who skipped everything, here is the review of how I judged the upcoming winter shows. Of course I hold the usually disclaimer that this is dependent on shows both being fansubbed and not getting licensed.

Also, it just seems to me that this season doesn’t have any obviously interesting shows. It may end up being a good season, but there really aren’t that many “oh, WOW!” series out there. As a result, the line between “Will Watch” and “May Watch” is rather thin.

And obviously I haven’t listed anything as “will” or even “may” blog, showing that what I’ll blog is wide, wide open. It will probably end up being some of my “will watch” series, but we’ll see. In any case, I’ll probably try to pick up 3 series: 2 full season and 1 half season if I can.

  1. Noooo!!! Don’t drop Toshokan Sensou from your watchlist!! x__x;;;

It’s more fun that it first sounds, really. I’m sensing FMP vibes from it, and character dynamics are just great!

I’ve cooked up two pimping posts for this one. Now if that doesn’t convince you, then I’ll accept that this really isn’t your cup of tea :)

  2. There are several titles that sound promising come Spring, hopefully they’ll meet our expectations. =)

Itazura na Kiss, Kure-nai, Nabari no Ou, Real Drive, Toshokan Sensou, Vampire Knight, Special A, Nijuu Mensou no Musume, Himitsu Top Secret are the ones in my tentative watchlist. ^_^

  3. “This sounds like a conservative’s dream come true. Fighting evil political correct people who are oppressing all the conservatives from spewing vile hatred!”

Interesting… Unfortunately, you have just defeated your own point, and made yourself out to seem quite a hypocrite. It seems that you are, in fact, spewing defamatory hate speech and labeling another group of people stereotypically across the board in your statement. Furthermore, if the world was controlled by forces truly bent on “political correctness” and censoring free speech then you would not even be allowed write this in your blog. Conservatives aren’t the only ones interested in free speech and anti-political correctness. When logically looked at from any school of thought that wishes to have the freedom to express their own ideas, the absence to political correctness to it’s fullest extent is essential for everyone; including those you disagree with. Unless, of course, you believe in freedom of speech that only applies to you and those you agree with. The kind of freedom of speech and silences all opposing views because you think are unjust or incorrect. This looks more like tyranny and not freedom at all.

“Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too.” – Voltaire from his Essay on Tolerance.

Or as rephrased by Beatrice Hall in Friends of Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.

That having been said, I disagree with you that this show most likely will not be worth watching. I think the idea of an anime about a Librarian Liberation Front armed to the tooth to defend freedom of speech has a plethora of potential for terrific comedy. I can only imagine what the enforcement of overdue books would look like. :D

Other than that it seems like you have a decent blog here though (and I will defend your right to write it – probably not to the death though…).

    Have a nice day. :)

  5. I watched for first Soul Eater last night…

I gotta say the artwork is unique. I was astounded, confused and intrigued with the quirky style. The colors are very rich and character designs are pretty unique.

The storyline is a bit lacking, but I never determine that until watching the first 5 episodes of any anime.

The voice acting is smooth and fit the characters quite well.

The artwork is enough to keep me watching until I determine if the storyline is too shallow to continue.

    I give it a 3.5 out of 5
